It is written into the law of our land. Anyone who possesses or uses a TV set or any device capable of receiving a broadcast television signal must pay their annual television licence fee. Failing to do so is a criminal offence punishable by a fine of up to R500 or not more than six months' imprisonment, or both.
New technology is making it ever easier to detect and prosecute pirate viewers. Using electronic detection devices our Television Licence Inspectors can pinpoint the exact location of a television set on any premises, down to your lounge or kids' bedroom.
Unlicensed viewing is not necessarily cause for instant imprisonment, though. Our TV Licence Inspectors do provide an opportunity for pirate viewers to make good. At a cost. Paying the required annual licence fee (currently R250) PLUS a penalty of double the licence fee (R500) will have you back on the right side of the law. Failure to comply with this period of grace will, however, result in legal action being instituted.
Firms of attorneys are contracted by TV Licences as Debt Collection Agents to collect money from people with overdue television licence accounts. Failure to pay the prescribed amount will result in legal action being instituted by the SABC. Should judgement be granted against a debtor, the result could be attachment of a debtor’s salary, moveable or immovable property in order to settle the claim. Just R250 for a full year's legal viewing seems a much smaller price to pay.
Television Licence Inspectors
Licence inspectors can be identified by an inspector ID card. Payments should be made only at a TV Licences paypoint, and never directly to a Television Licence Inspector.
